Johnson looks forward to working with Biden: "America is Britain's closest and most important ally"

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said on Sunday that the United States is Britain's closest and most important ally, and expressed confidence in the possibility of accomplishing many goals with US President-elect Joe Biden, in many areas, from trade to climate change.

Johnson, whom US President Donald Trump once described fondly as "the Trump of Britain," congratulated Biden on winning the election on Saturday, saying he looked forward to "working closely together on our shared priorities."

But some say Johnson, a leading force in the campaign to leave the European Union, may struggle to build a close relationship with Biden, who in the past has raised doubts about Brexit and has never met the prime minister.

Johnson and his Foreign Minister Dominic Raab and other conservatives were keen to emphasize the extent of the convergence between the next US administration and the British government with regard to common interests.

"The United States is our closest and most important ally," Johnson told reporters.

This was the case during the era of every president and every prime minister.

This situation will not change », adding that he has not yet spoken to the president-elect.

He said he looked forward to working with Biden and his team "on a lot of issues that are crucial for us in the coming weeks and months, such as tackling climate change, trade, international security and so many other issues."
